There's no getting around the fact that the PS5 simply doesn't have much usable storage space right out of the box. The console's super fast, custom SSD is 825GB, but a chunk of that is taken up by the operating system itself. The bottom line is that you're left with around 650-700GB of free space.
And with games like Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War demanding a massive 133GB when fully installed, it's easy to imagine just how quickly your PS5 can run out of room. This is usually where additional storage options enter the equation, but with PS5, you won't be able to install another SSD until later down the line.
The PS5 has an easy-to-access slot that can house a second SSD should you want to expand the system's storage space, but in a statement sent to The Verge, Sony confirms that this slot will be disabled at launch.
In other words, we're going to have to make do with the PS5's default storage for at least a little while. As you may already know, Sony is yet to whitelist any third party SSDs for use with the PS5, and it'll obviously want to make sure that everything's in order before it does.
We already kind of knew that this would be the case after PS5 architect Mark Cerny said that additional storage space would be something to explore "a bit past" launch. But still, we're hoping this is all sorted out sooner rather than later.
It's worth mentioning that although you won't be able to fit an additional SSD in your PS5 at launch, you will be able to make use of external hard drives. At the time of writing, you cannot store PS5 games on an external hard drive, but you can use an external hard drive for all of your PS4 needs.
Were you hoping to expand your PS5's storage space straight away? Wait patiently for whitelisted products in the comments section below.

Sony launched also 3 instruction videos about PS5 settings. More UI !!!
https://www.youtube.com/c/playstationsupport
I was going to rough it for a bit anyway. I already moved everything over to my external and plan to move games back and forth as needed. I imagine transferring should be similar to Series X speeds and that will be fine.
So we can only play perhaps 4-5 big AAA games and 10-20 indie games at the same time? Oh my god, whatever shall we do!!?
Lol, I never needed to upgrade my launch PS4 500Gb and I’m sure I’ll never need to upgrade this as I don’t play anywhere near this many games at once.
@SilkySmile89
Really? I’ll have to hunt this down! Thanks.
Edit: didn’t find it, but found a video showing universal settings! Games will be able to make use of universal presets such as difficulty level, 1st or :rd person preference and, I really really hope, vertical axis inversion preference!
I don't have problem with it since I don't play cod warzone lol, 600gb is about 10 demon's souls which is fine by me
That’s really disappointing to hear. Since I’m purchasing miles ultimate sackboy cod & demon souls day 1 half my storage is already gone that’s before I move over persona 5 royal ghost of Tsushima and all my other games and saves. Hoping they have some storage options soon.
Why? Ridiculous.
It sounds like they're trying to stupid proof it maybe. If there are no compatible drives yet, I guess they're concerned with people potentially causing problems for themselves.
Looks like theybjust dropped a few vidz on the youtube bout a hour ago
@nessisonett What he said
@HotGoomba___Rebrand I've got your back!
@HotGoomba___Rebrand https://www.pushsquare.com/forums/ps_general_discussion/formatting
So it seems play does have its limits...

@SilkySmile89 Where did you see those videos? I can't seem to find them.
@thefourfoldroot Same here. I just d/l a game, play it, either finish it or get bored of it and then delete it.
@stupidget
Yep, lol, it’s just the tidy thing to do.
@SilkySmile89 Nevermind, I just found them. Thanks anyway!
@Anti-Matter @theheadofabroom @ShogunRok Thank you, I'll keep that in mind!
Luckily moving files between drives at the start won’t be too bad thanks to the faster read/write speeds right?
@thefourfoldroot Good for you
I've got a 4TB external with roughly 500gb spare... I'll look to transfer some of these to PS5 internal to take advantage of PS5 enhancements... Then after installing a couple of new PS5 games that's my storage practically used up
Maybe uninstalling Astrobot will free up 200GB
Why do you need upgrade day one though?
Edit
It's already an important investment for the console and a TV.
I might consider extra storage a couple years later on, when it's good value.
Well that's a bit deflating. Ah well complaining ain't gonna change it, hopefully we won't have to wait too long for a compatible list,
Does anyone know if the PS5 still does the ridiculous "copy the whole dang game" like PS4 does when ever you installupdate a game? Needing to keep double space free just to update a game is what's really going to be a problem with what the size games will probably be because of 4K textures.
What is the issue? Just keep the games you play regularly installed and ready to go. There will be more than enough room to have 6/7 games installed, does anyone play 7 different games in the space of a week or even a month? Do you really need your entire catalogue of games installed and ready to play within seconds? Have some patience or plan ahead.
@JJ2 I know but you and me and others alike probably rather have the option even if we dont do it day one but thats just me.
@HMazzy111 It just feels like a step back.
@ohhaime
Cerny said its not needed with SSD I think.
@TheFrenchiestFry Uh... what exactly did he say?
@Flaming_Kaiser
Yea maybe I'm not rich enough haha
@ohhaime Strangely enough some of the new updates for my games don't have the "copy files" thing.
Not surprised, would rather Sony have adequate time to test things & whitelist the drives that will be compatible than provide no guidance and have a bunch of uncertain shoppers (these things aren’t cheap after all)...i’m sure it won’t be long and we’ll have a list of compatible drives by early next year
@JJ2 Same here but still i rather have the option from the start.
I can imagine PS3 situation for PS5. 😑
I don't really see this as a big deal. The drives with sufficient performance to meet specs don't exist yet so what does it matter if the port is enabled.
As a side note, I also expect they are going to be prohibitively expensive for at least the next 6 months.
@MeatyVeg
Well, maybe it’s good for me, or maybe I don’t have the time or inclination to play 50 games simultaneously? Lol
For someone like me that would share the PS5 with my GF and my son, this sucks. Dont families share consoles anymore or everyone rich and have their own system? Guess I will wait and hope they put in a bigger SSD.
@Anti-Matter Like how?
Besides who the hell wants to upgrade on day one?
@Medic_Alert
Are you sure? I thought Western Digital announced a drive that would begin shipping next year.
EDIT: nvm, it looks like it is available now but the "RGB" model isn't available until early next year.
Will PS5 support external SSD external like the PS4 does at lunch
You can store PS5 games on an external hard drive but you won't be able to play them from there. Article is a little misleading.
What agitates me most about this is that it should be enabled at launch. Because while it may not be ideal to drop big bucks on a PCIE gen 4 drive for PS5 games at launch, I should be able to put in a PCIE gen 3 NVME SSD into that slot to use in the same manner as an external drive. That would keep me from using up one of 3 USB ports and keep everything looking tidy. The PCIE slot on the console should act no different than the high speed USB ports so I don't really see why that isn't an option.
I'm thinking I'll get an Xbox series X first, I have a decent backlog of ps4 games I really wanna play but don't have a ps4 but Xbox seems like the better system more and more and while it's lacking in launch games Gamepass is also pretty handy
@Medic_Alert in all honesty I'd bet that the WD drive and the Samsung 980 pro will both be fast enough but Sony likely needs time to test and validate the drives with their firmware. Especially considering that both the WD850 and the Samsung 980pro both just became available this week.
@Deadcow That’s a very very good point, the PSVR deal means you’ll need to install both versions. Didn’t think of that at all!
The thing is, there are no whitelisted SSDs officially available right now. As soon as those are available, then the functionality will be opened up.
The most important thing is that you will be able to do this and Sony has selected a non-proprietary format. That's good news!
@ShootMePlease Thats not an option because while those of us that visit these forums would have no problem; it would certainly confuse the masses and create a lot more confusion when buying a drive. (I like the idea though!)
@Medic_Alert Yeah I don't get it. I buy a lot of games, but its not usually till around mid to late generation when I get to the point that I have enough un-finished games (that I swear I will finish one day) sitting around on HDD to be at the point where I have to make a sacrifice and delete a game I haven't played in months. Maybe I don't care as much about game deletion because I use physical media and can reinstall it in minutes? Regardless I doubt I will expand the PS5 for at least two or more years, and we can still use an external drive to transfer if you need.
I'll have demons souls, miles morales/spidey remastered and bugsnax installed and will then just delete as needed. Its not ideal, but what is. I wasn't intending to buy additional storage at launch, but will probably get on it in the future, depending on costs
more than enough space for a year at least so why this coming up as some sort of issue is pointless IMO. the speed in which you add a game will be so quick you won't care.
Some users here should realize that not everybody has unlimited and super fast internet.
The world is quite big and having a job is quite a blessing in these times.
Publishers cut their costs thanks to digital, while customers pay always more for internet and data storage.
I doubt most people are going to fill up the storage on the PS5 right away. If so, an external option would suffice for now. I’m betting the internal expansion bay will be usable with an update as soon as there’s a confirmed compatible SSD made for the PS5.
can you use the external hd to back up PS5 games so you can copy them instead of redownloading?
@thefourfoldroot "Lol, I never needed to upgrade my launch PS4 500Gb and I’m sure I’ll never need to upgrade this as I don’t play anywhere near this many games at once."
That's fantastic news for you, unfortunately for many of us were not direct clones of you so we're likely not to have the same gaming habits. I have to do severe space management with a 2TB 🤷
I'm confused. Is this the crazy expensive storage that everyone baulked at when the details were revealed and no-one was going to buy until the price came down? Now everyone is in uproar because they can't yet use the storage they weren't buying. Who knows, perhaps in 3 months they'll unlock the drive? The next gen is around the corner and everyone sounds miserable?
I don't think it's a big issue tbh. Not many people would've made use of this early on anyway
@andreoni79 you don't have to delete them and redownload them. You can offload them to cheap external storage if you are worried about preservation or bandwidth is an issue.
I'm fine with this m.2 is rather pricey at the mo IL upgrade a year after I get this beast.
@Juanalf
Erm, cool(?). I don’t see how my statement implied I would expect my experience to be the same for everyone. I simply don’t play more than 25 games simultaneously.
I can see situations where that might be a possibility though, a family of 4 for example, or a dorm room - then I think it would be reasonable to expect multiple people to split the cost of excessive storage needs so it might be annoying not to be able to.
@Medic_Alert on a positive note, you were able to secure a pre-order so you are in better shape than many people
The article says that PS5 games cannot be stored on an external drive, but I am almost certain that there are multiple sources saying that they can be stored but not played from an external HDD.
Unless you're going to buy every launch game its not really going to be an issue for a little while at least
What about the 20 PS plus games? I would if nothing else download them and I guess put them on an external drive. My internet is very slow so.
@evan23 That's what I always planned to do and I think it's a reasonable compromise. But did Sony officially confirmed it's doable? It seems so according many sites but I can't find any official source about that.
They don't want people to return their faulty PS5s and blame Sony for bad manufacturing if the user themselves broke something in the console while installing the extra SSD.
I'm sure that they already have a firmware ready to upload to activate extra SSD when they are happy with the PS5 rollout and patched any hiccups in the new system before they allow anything to be installed inside the PS5.
@OmegaStriver transferring will only be as fast as your slowest drive so what ever the max read/write speed of your external will be your transfer speed.
@thefourfoldroot Yeah, my PS4 is in the living room so there are games on there that I’m playing, my brother’s playing or my mum’s playing. Plus I’m ADHD therefore literally can’t bring myself to play one game at the same time. It’s bizarre, I can be knee deep into an RPG then a part of my mind tells me to install Tony Hawk and completely lose focus. I’ve almost filled 2TB on my PS4 in total and I delete things when I’m done.
@ShogunRok Looking for clarity. Your article states that you cannot store PS5 on HDD? I understand that you can't run a game from HDD but can't we utilize an external to hold the game and then transfer to SSD when ready to play? My internet is metered in USA. If I'm hearing you correctly, I hope Sony changes this. I have a 8 TB home cloud I was hoping to "park" purchased games and avoid redownloading from the internet. Thanks!
@Ben7982 I saw a Series X HDD to SSD on a YouTube and it’s speeds were alright.
I have Assassin's Creed, Demon's Souls, Overcooked, Spider-Man Remastered and Miles Morales, and Bugsnax coming on day one. I have a 2TB external SSD with my PS4 titles on there. I am worried that Hitman 3 will be my COD (ongoing service) in January and I will struggle to have even a few PS5 titles on the system without deleting and transferring to an external drive. Guess that will have to do for now.
@graysoncharles that is a totally different point than what I was saying. The article stated you can't store PS5 games on an external HDD which in fact you can store them on one. You just can't play them off an external HDD. You would have to move it back to the SSD.
@Medic_Alert I can't say that I have ever had that problem. I pick up a game, play it, finish it (...usually), and move to another game. With rare exceptions (which is why I end up having to delete a game or two towards mid generation). Granted I do not play multi-player games, so that might change things a bit.
The people excusing Sony constantly baffles me “all I play is fortnight so I don’t get why anyone has an issue”. I have two kids of different ages, myself and my wife, were all into different types of games, this Ssd situation is poor and seems like we weren’t ready for it yet. More limits on play.
Maybe i wasn't gonna expand it right away, but... Sony can't seem to stop churning out negative points after negative points.
From the storage lower by 200GB from the expected value, to games that don't support Ray tracing yet, to seemingly not supporting the 1440p resolution (according to new released info, not the Benq news from 1-2 weeks ago), to lack of console stocks, and now to not being able to expand the storage for a while... is there a fracking limit to all of this?
I wonder what other unfortunate surprises the reviews will uncover, once the embargos are lifted...
This is the sort of thing that has put me off buying an xbox series or PS5 at launch.
I'm waiting 3-5 years while they sort out the kinks.
Ok. This ensures me, that "not having" ps5 at launch was a good move. While games become much larger, there is 650GB a real joke. When I bought my ps4 pro 1TB (cca 850GB free space), I filled HDD in about 2 days. Till that time I'm still fighting with space. And that "copying game" after every update, leaves you with need to let free about quarter of HDD...
This all reminds me of PS3 20GB that was created for FIFA players.
By now PS5 has huge limits and that filth starts to rise to surface... I don't know, but I more and more feel that PS5 is another double cross.
@get2sammyb @ShogunRok I'm confused, the article says PS5 games can't be stored on a Harddrives, but Greg Miller said yesterday that you can store PS5 games to transfer to and from the console and the drive, you just can't play a game off the drive.
Please could you clarify mate as that is baffling if Sony won't let you utilise HDDs like Xbox.
@Shinnok789 I don't understand how anyone thought that the entire amount of the hard drive was going to be available for use. That wasn't a reasonable expectation to begin with. Some is lost in the GB<->GiB conversion and some is needed for the operating system and cache. This was pretty much always going to be the case.
Miles Morales
SackBoy
AC Valhalla
I'll delete when finished (First year I'm Investing in games, not any more hardware)
Like my PC/Switch, I do not keep random games installed. I still have my original drive in my PS4 from 7 years ago.
@JoshuaTChandler This.
I'm almost certain Sony has said that PS5 games can indeed be stored on an external drive, but they would need to be transferred to the internal drive in order to be played.
This will be much faster than re-downloading games and will be beneficial to those like myself who's ISP imposes a monthly data cap.
@Agramonte
I think it's more if people live in a household with multiple players using the PlayStation. If you've got a couple of big multiplayer games installed all the time, then a few people who have a couple of their own single-player games installed to play they'll probably struggle for space.
@Richnj
I don’t think finite storage space is a kink, it’s an inevitability. We’ll just have to not expect a console to defy the laws of physics and understand we’ll have to delete games when we’ve finished with them unfortunately
@Shinnok789
That's a good point I've been seeing reviews of the XSX out, while the PS5 has embargo on it. That doesn't look good, like when CDPR only showed PC footage of Cyberpunk 2077 you knew there was something off.
@evan23 Quite simple actually: up until recently no one knew what the real capacity of the SSD was, or how big the OS was. When the SSD capacity was released, only the 825GB value was given, and no mention of what it represented. It could have very well been ~930GB (formatted) minus ~105GB for the system.
The bottom line is that in the end, we're left with 650GB available, which for many is not enough, considering many of the new games will occupy a medium of ~100GB each.
Add to that post-launch content, like patches, expansions and DLC's and the whole capacity will be full in no time.
As much as I would enjoy having a PS5 at launch, this is why I wait for the next release set. Get all those kinks out of the system and more peripherals. Hang in there early explorers!
On one hand, this makes sense since no supported drives exist. OTOH, I feel like they're piecemealing this machine together as they send it out the door, still. I don't get they impression even they knew this would be the case until now. You don't say "BTW that key feature we kept explaining more won't actually be enabled for quite some time" 7 days before it hits retail unless it's a surprise to you too.
I would actually.
I got Miles Morales Ultimate, Call of Duty, Godfall, Sackboy, Demon’s Souls, and Devil May Cry 5 SE for launch day. So that’ll probably be the whole thing right there.
I have a 8Tb external with so many PS4 games on it, and it's still only half full. I will put 2-3 PS5 games on my PS5. Then I will run PS4 games from the external drive. Thanks to my habit of buying physical games I do not have to worry about re-downloading games I delete. I can just reinstall from the UHD blu-ray. I could not force myself to pay $220 for a 1 Tb SSD when I only paid $149 for my 8Tb external HDD.
Does anyone have an idea as to how big of a SSD we will be able to put in that slot ? 1tb 2tb or even bigger ? ? Just curious that’s all. I have 2tb internal and 4tb external on my launch PS4 with only about 1tb free space left. I game a lot cause I got hurt at work (fell 3 stories) and can’t work no longer & had so far neck surgery ( 4 plates 16 screws) 2 back surgeries & both knees 2 on left knee and 1 on right knee. So gaming is my life now.
This move is very anti consumer and DRM, locking out hardware that people have paid for and not letting people use the external expansion slot until Sony says so, this is like the nanny state. 🙄🙄🙄
@hookedWORM17 Ah yes sorry, you can indeed store PS5 games on an external HDD — you just can't play them. I've updated the article!
@DonJorginho Just updated the article to correct that. You can store PS5 games on an external HDD — you just can't play them from it. Sorry for the confusion!
That's really annoying. The lack of storage space was one of my main gripes with the PS4. Now it's just gotten worse.
Sweet news! I can focus on completing one game, install then onto next one.
@thefourfoldroot Well show me a platform that has infinite space and I'll agree with you.
The issue isn't finite space, it's a threefold issue. 1) There is no physical solution. Even physical games require drive space. 2) Games continue to get larger despite an improvement in the storage. 3) The storage itself is smaller than last gen, but also more expensive. That's a kink.
So Switch allows physical games to be stored on the carts, and the games themselves are generally smaller in size. And even though the 1TB is still costly, I just picked one up for cheaper than the 1TB expansion costs on xbox series. The Xbox One and PS4 allow high capacity and relatively cheap solutions.
What the new consoles have is a downgrade in every aspect except performance. Also, having expansion slots locked at launch is a clear sign of something that needs testing and improvement before it's fully released. I consider that a kink as it will eventually match the capacity and price of current gen, and I'm not interested until then.
@thefourfoldroot when one console services an entire household's various gaming preferences, holding only a few AAA games is yes, kind of a problem. It's cool if not everyone is in that situation but surely you can understand that teenagers, children, husbands, wives... they don't all play the same games.
This doesn't even take into consideration say, one person having a racing game they plug away at periodically along side a story driven adventure game and a FtP multiplayer game they hop on when their friends are online. Now expand scenarios like this across an entire household and it doesn't seem that hard to get why people might be unhappy with such pitiful storage.
You can't brag about being at the forefront of next gen gaming and not provide a console that is conducive to how next gen gamers use the console.
Sorry for the rant. Ended up longer than I intended.
I never expanded my 500GB PS4's storage and managed just fine. I imagine the same will be true of the PS5.
@thefourfoldroot on YouTube. PlayStation channel
I wish it was bigger(that's what she said) + the PS5 had PS1/2&3 disc B/C to but like in real life you can't always get what you want. I just hope the expandable SSD's come down in price quickly and hopefully the PS6 will use the same SSD's then at least that will come with a lot of TB's(hopefully)
@zupertramp
So you think Microsoft and Sony should presume a console needs to service a half dozen people and make the rest of us pay for the storage we don’t need? I believe it’s ok to give a reasonable amount for a person or two and allow people to expand if they are sharing with so many. Perhaps it would have been nice to have multiple options at launch, but maybe Sony and ms don’t think any £800 consoles would be sold?
@Richnj
But storage space is not smaller. My base PS4 had a 500gb hard drive (not all available) and the ps5 800gb odd. That’s bigger. Games aren’t nearly twice the size.
If comparing like for like in terms of launch model for launch model I see no downgrade.
@ShogunRok Thanks for the clarification mate, in that case I don't get all the controversy! Just buy a big external HDD and you can easily swap games in and out the console without filling up that SSD as quickly.
Great article!
Wow...people that don't have internet that want to expand their storage are gonna be SoL when it does get the update to allow it.
Thats just seriously bad.
@God_of_Nowt I find it difficult to believe they'd have downplayed storage concerns, talked about add on drives, and not believed they would be available near launch without clearly saying so. PS5 feels like it's its own Pro model that isn't launching for another few years. I get that it's so state of the art, so cool etc etc. But the impression i had early, and the impression i have now is that what they wanted to do isn't something that should be launching now. It needed probably another year or two in the oven.
Because of their business practices PlayStation has, for me, become an exclusives box rather than my main box. Which isn't wholly a knock, i have more than plenty in my ps backlog alone! But my point is, the storage issue doesn't affect me as much as someone who has in ps5 as their primary system, I'm not going to be terribly limited by it, but and the current storage setup feels like a work in progress at launch..... Because it is. Not that the ms solution is cheap, and yes it's not as future tech..... But as a result its actually complete at the start of the gen rather than half way though it.
I was there for rest mode taking well over a year to deliver. We've done this dance before....
@thefourfoldroot It's true I'd have a hard time agreeing that everyone should be forced into paying for storage they don't need but I guess I'm just still really gobsmacked that the console's storage capacity is actually going down from one gen to the next. I'm not saying we need more but just the same amount as the Pro would have been nice.
And I actually like the idea of multiple options. I remember buying the more expensive PS3 so I don't mind though I know it was a source of much ire for some.
@God_of_Nowt yeah I should be clear, there's definitely workarounds and none of this is the end of the world but who wouldn't prefer just a nice round 1TB?
But certainly some of the exasperation at this news that you'll need to wait for a patch to plug in an expansion SSD might be a little overblown since yes, there's no drives to put in anyway.
With no pre-orders i wonder how many people will get an xbox as they still have plenty to order at launch and 1tb inside.
I prefer sonys lineup but this just gets messier and messier as a loyal ps fan for years i would have hoped to have the option like other tare gamers to order one rather than by 12lucnh time the lot has sold out.
Game has some pre-orders for launch day but doesnt know if you will get it launch day or have to wait a month.
@Robinsad i agree, same situation as me. Will have one PS5 and family using it. Sony should of bit the bullet and gave us a 1Tb drive. That little extra space helps. Plus with the SDD going bad after years will kill the game collection fans. I know people with reg SNES still. 20 yrs no PS5 cause of bad SSD that can't be replaced.
@zupertramp
I could see that if it had gone down generation on generation but, not only has it not (base PS4 was 500Gb), but it’s a much faster and more advanced storage device. By rights the price of the PS5 should be much higher than the PS4 just due to this, but it isn’t...
I think eventually households with multiple users or friends who share between 4 or 5 people will just have to stump up for more storage space, but I think that’s fair enough.
Has anyone seen the speed of Xbox SX SSD? If so is it fast and would it of been good enough for PS5?
@thefourfoldroot You're having to compare like for like because that's the only way to rationalise away the downgrade.
My xbox one and PS4 have 1TB internal and an 8TB and 4TB external. These types of expansions will not be possible on the next gen.
I'll say it a third time. I'd rather wait until they work out the kinks and offer at least much more comparable storage solutions.
Edit: it's worth noting that while current games are comparable in size, early 8th gen games were smaller.
@Richnj
And I’ll say again that the storage size is not a “kink” it’s an inevitable result of the more advanced technology not being mainstream even in the PC space yet. If you are waiting for the price of this speed of SSD to fall significantly be prepared to wait 4-5 years absolute minimum, but likely more.
And why would we not compare launch model to launch model? it’s the only fair way to compare given the limited size of the early adopter pool and so the equivalent economies of scale involved.
@thefourfoldroot You: "If you are waiting for the price of this speed of SSD to fall significantly be prepared to wait 4-5 years absolute minimum, but likely more."
Me about 5 posts back: "I'm waiting 3-5 years while they sort out the kinks"
I mean, if you're going to threaten me with having to do something to get the thing I want, it helps if I didn't already say I was going to do the something.
"And why would we not compare launch model to launch model?"
Because if the PS4 had launched with 60GB as the PS3 had done, it would have caused a major backlash.
@God_of_Nowt haha, i on the other hand use rest mode on everything and would go crazy without it!
I never said it was a step change. I said it wasn't ready for release and needed a few more years in the oven. If what they've been saying at the last minute didn't match expectations that's because they helped create expectations more or less on purpose because it's a better look than reality.
I still say it's incomplete. Yes the drives don't exist but that's kind of the point. If their drive was not matchable, why aren't they selling their own version of it to add on? And if the end result is that faster drives are coming in general we end up with 2 possibilities: they'll be so expensive they're not practical to use with the console during it's lifetime, or prices will be par, but the net result is gamers won't actually be using the CernyDrive.... Thell be running games off the new bigger drives rendering CernyDrive little more than a starter set. Which then makes me wonder why all the R&D expense to build a custom drive simply to get it to market faster than the main market version that performs as well or better and will end up being PS5s primary drive, especially for digital gamers? Launching later could have meant launching with the mass market drives that are even faster without the need for the proprietary drive to begin with.
Launched too early for what they wanted to try to do imo.
@Richnj
Cool, wait 5 years for the “kink” of economics to work itself out.
And if you don’t know the situation regarding SSDs of this type and why MS and Sony couldn’t shove in one of sufficient size, accounting for the new operating system allocation, to make you happy at a console friendly price then maybe someone else can take over because this is like hitting my head against a brick wall and I have better things to do,
Was this article updated because I could have sworn when I read it around lunch time it said you could not transfer PS5 games to external hard drives. I have not been stressing about upgrading the internal because I don't see any issue with having a one-two minute transfer. To play something that I haven't played in a while. Having 5x the storage for half the price is worth a the transfer wait to me.
@thefourfoldroot No, I understand why the drives are small. It's new, expensive tech and it's a sacrifice they made to have SSDs. That's what makes it a kink.
To be honest, you brought the headache on yourself. I expressed my feelings quite clearly with my very first post, that I'd prefer to wait until the solutions became reasonable to me, and you seemingly decided I was wrong to have made a decision for me based on my own feelings and needs.
@God_of_Nowt Okay thanks thought I was maybe going senile. I mean I understand having games ready to go at a moment's notice would be ideal. Also that maybe some people like to juggle 20-30 games at a time. Its just not at all an issue for my playing style. When eventually prices go down that convenience may be worth the money but right now it's not to me.
really, plenty of faux outrage, who exactly absolutely needs to download dozen+ large games straight away
@thefourfoldroot it's just you're comparing the wrong launch model. The PS4 Pro isn't a base PS4; it's a newer PS4. And if the next gen is meant to be a step up from the Pro, then I'm of the opinion everything should be a step up.
Obviously the hard drive is much faster and that amount of storage is all we were going to get at these prices but doesn't mean I have to love it. But yeah I'll probably just pony up for additional storage as soon as possible. Just never needed to do that in the past.
@God_of_Nowt Or to flip it another way, using the PlayStation market as a beta test to fund future tech that isn't ready yet..... If i wanted to pay too much to get premature tech that's not actually finished until years later, I'd have stuck with pc a decade ago
It's not about delaying launch until extra drives are available alone. I question the purpose of the onboard drive at all. Not it's performance. It's existence. Like I said it's a small drive that will be outperformed by mass produced drives within the year - and anybody needing more space will have to play their ps5 games off one of those superior drives anyway. Business necessities aside, CernyDrive's only apparent purpose was to be a place holder to get to market sooner than waiting for those drives to be available. And if they'd waited for those faster drives, they could have built the I/O around the even better performance offered. Either that or it's just typical WDIH syndrome.
But it's not about consoles waiting for tech overall. The only other consoles I can think of that launched in a premature/incomplete state are Virtual Boy (that was knowingly released unfinished due to Yamauchis impatience) and 3ds that had dodgy stereoscopic tech until the refresh.
I can't agree about storage being unnecessary though. I myself have a digital library of hundreds of games on the green platform, dozens on blue, and quite a few i never played yet or played briefly. I surely don't intend to delete any of them. Ever. The whole joy of digital is having a library available at any time, and while I do have internet at the moment that could support downloads and deletes at whim, i don't intend to abuse the network like that, and I'm one of lucky few that have that kind of luxury. I fully understand the limits of the new storage tech, costs, capacity limits, etc. But i also don't think downplaying "buying too many games and not deleting them if you're not playing them" is the right view either. I like my library. I intend to grow that library. On both platforms. I bought it to have it when i want to play it, not to burn through it and discard it, into the next.
Ironically the current storage situation actively encourages, even demands, a reduction in game purchases. You surely can't be cheering for reduced unit sales!
Now don't mind me as i wait for demons souls to hit 19.99 so i can try it and not play it, while not deleting it, like all my other FromSoft games.
Mentioned this elsewhere just in case anyone sees but I’m still a tad confuddled to the storage situation. You can use your existing external hard drive to play PS4 games on the ps5 but you can’t use your external hard drive to play or store ps5 games on,mine is 4tb so plenty of room. Can anyone clarify please ty
I delete games after I've completed them anyway so dont care
Dont understand how people are getting mad about this???
This is old news......... Mark Cerny announced at The Road To Ps5 showcase, that we would have to wait for there list of compatible SSDs............ and that wont be till AFTER the console launches.
@Stonecold You can store PS5 games on an external HDD just can't play them off one like you can with PS4 games stored on the same HDD.
@DonJorginho thanks for clearing that up for me 🤛
@DonJorginho @hookedWORM17 Bloody hell, another update on this. As it turns out, you cannot store PS5 games on an external HDD. We've now been able to test this ourselves (thanks Sammy).
Some sites, like IGN, are saying that you can do it, but in our experience, this is incorrect. Whether Sony will add this functionality later, we don't know.
Sorry for the confusion. Again!
@Stonecold See my post above!
@ShogunRok Thank you for the update man, that is bloody frustrating due to Xbox's stance on it, can you confirm that you can run the backwards compatible upgrades for Ghost Of Tsushima and Days Gone off the HDD? If that's the case then this isn't as bad, albeit still a minor cock up.
@DonJorginho Yes, you can run PS4 games from an external HDD and they will still benefit from the PS5 hardware and Game Boost.
However, because they're not stored on the system's SSD, the load times won't be improved as much.
Phew!
@ShogunRok hi. I thought they said you could store the ps5 games on the external hard drive and then had to move them to the ps5 storage to actual play them. That’s what they originally said,they must have changed their minds
@Stonecold All we know is that right now, we can't do it. Again, maybe this is Sony's plan for a future update (hopefully).
@Sekys With what they are asking for a NVMe that can hit 7000Mb/s - even if you are in that situation, your best solution is managing that space.
